Noted poet and lyricist Muqtida Hasan Nida Fazli better known as Nida Fazli passed away on 8th February 2016. The revered writer worked with late ghazal singer Jagjit Singh and created magic with soulful compositions remembered till date. He gave some of the most memorable songs including Aa bhi jaa (Sur), Tu is tarah se meri zindagi mein (Aap To Aise Na The) and Hosh waalon ko khabar Kya (Sarfarosh). He was recipient of Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India.
Born on 12 October 1938 into a Kashmiri family in Delhi, Nida Fazli passed through the unrest that saw the partition of India. Though after Indo Pak partition his parents migrated to Pakistan, young Fazli decided to stay in India. As a poet, Fazli was inspired by the expression of Mirza and Ghalib and the writing style of Meera and Kabir. He was also fascinated by works of Gogol, T.S. Eliot, Anton Chekhov and Takasaki.
Career in Bollywood
Nida Fazli made big in Bollywood by composing two final two songs of Razia Sultan. His style soon attracted other Hindi filmmakers. He also wrote lyrics for Aap to aise na the, Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin (1996) and Gudiya. Apart from his other works he is most remembered for "Hosh walon ko khabar kya be-khudi kya cheez hai...." sung by late Jagjit Singh in Sarfarosh. Fazli wrote the title song of many TV serials like "Neem ka Ped", "Sailaab", "Jaane Kya Baat Hui" and "Jyoti". During his long span career he got the opportunity to work with some of the most notable artists like Jagjit Singh, Chitra Singh, Kavita Krishnamurthy and many others. With Jagjit Singh he brought an album named Insight in 1994 which got appreciation for its soulful poetry and music.
Nida Fazli was dead against communal politics and was vocal critique of communal riots, and fundamentalism. Due to his various social initiatives he was awarded with number of awards including the National Harmony Award for writing on communal harmony. During his lifetime he wrote almost 24 books in Urdu, Hindi and Gujarati— some of which are assigned as school textbooks in Maharashtra. Mor Naach, Ham Qadam, and Safar Me Dhoop To Hogi are some of his notable works.
